Race Report

Dear Competitors,
As you will be aware this was our first attempt to follow in the footsteps of Otter Controls, the previous organisers of The High Peak 40 Mile Challenge. The previous standards of organisation and hospitality were very high indeed. and I hope we were able to achieve a similar standard.
The weather was favourable, and the two starts (from the new starting areas) were on schedule. In the runner’s race Richard Kearns of Compton Harriers and John Foster of Wycombe Phoenix TRA set a fast pace together up to Eccles Pike whereDamon Rodwell of Hardley Runners took up the challenge. He was closely followed by lan Hill of Bingley Harriers, Paul Dunn Trail Runner Association, Mike Wynne of the Dark Peak Fell Runners, Chris Fanning of Hardley Runners. Stuart Mann of Verlea A.C. and Donald O’Brian of Buxton A.C.
By the end of Cavedale Richard Kearns had regained the lead which he held to win in a time of 5 hours 28 minutes 20 seconds, a time which compares favourably with those of previous years.
In the ladies race Wendy Holmes of the White Peak Fell Runners gradually and steadily forged ahead to win in 7 hours 37 minutes 54 seconds. Edwina Hill of Glossopdale Harriers came in second still inside eight hours.
Our congratulations to these excellent performances and to all of you for completing this challenging event.
Of the 209 starters, 15 did not complete the course and our commiserations go out to them, and we hope it will not deter you from competing next year.
The event expects to raise over £1500 for various charitable organisations, the majority of the money, raised through various sponsorships, going towards Cancer Research. Some of the money raised will be distributed to the voluntary
organisations that helped run the checkpoints and traffic crossings.
