Race Report

Dear Competitor,
This year’s race was once again a very successful event, though the weather was not as good as last year, even all those hardy people who supported runners and walkers seemed to enjoy it. There were a number of improved PB’s and overall performances seemed better than last year, particularly with new comers, some runner’s improved their times dramatically.
As you know this was our second attempt at running the event as a Trail Runners National Championship and thanks go to John Foden for his help and support in putting the event on and, though there were some major hiccups prior to the race, it seemed the event went well.
This is my last year running the event I would like tot ake this opportunity to congratulate all competitors who took part and in particular thank all individuals clubs and organisations who gave considerable time and effort towards making the event so very successful, not least of course the volunteers that manned checkpoints, the intrepid catering team, the drivers, radio operators and the computer and control staff.
Special mention must be made about the person who makes, repairs, updates and collates all the signs and markers on the course. She is the ever-enthusiastic Julie Skirvan. The ever reliable and hardworking Jane Lisser, without whom this event would never have got of the ground, must also be mentioned. Sadly Jane also finishes this year and I would publicly like to thank her for her unstinting support and drive over the last seven years.
After announcing my retirement from running this event I must say a little about next year. The administration and organisation of the High Peak 40 will be taken over by the Buxton and District Lions Club and the club member responsible will be Bill Allan who has himself competed in the event several times. I wish him well for next year. Next years event will be on Saturday 17th September and the Buxton Community School will host on the day as before.
It has been suggested that the course should be changed to reduce the amount of road running and include more track and path terrain. This would make it a predominantly a trail runner’s course. At present it creates a challenge for all runners and walkers of different persuasions by virtue of the different types of terrain covered.
Bill Alan would like to hear what you think so that any future event (but not 2005) can attempt to fulfil competitors needs. You can contact him at www.highpeak40.co.uk (This web site wil be operational by January) or contact John Foden at john.Foden@bluecom.net.
Finally many thanks for your patronage and I look forward to witnessing a superb event next year.
