Race Report
Dear Competitors
Once again the words which come to mind are “another year and another High Peak 40 Mile Challenge.”
To be part of the Montrail Series, as well as part of the Trail Running Association Open Championship, was a great bonus for which I am very grateful.
At this stage I must apologise again for Checkpoint 9 (Upper Dale) being downgraded to a passage control. I hope it was not too much of a problem for you. The certificates which you should have received at the finish will be posted to you by the end of October. I did say within 28 days but do bear with me if I don’t start counting for a day or so yet. Another apology is due to the gentleman who entered on Saturday morning and whose details were not passed to me. The blank space is obvious in the results!
One of you said, at I think, Checkpoint 6 (Castleton) on being given a drink that without the volunteers the race could not happen. This is my cue to thank the volunteers – on checkpoints, in catering, communications, back up walkers and drivers. Judy Vale, the catering supremo, must be especially mentioned as must Julie Scirvan who ensures that all the signs get to the right place. These two ladies spend a lot of time prior to the event sorting out their relevant areas.
Next years event will I hope take place on Saturday 15th September and when all the details are finalised your entry forms will be posted to you. The entry form will also be on the website – (www.highpeak40.co.uk)
This time last year I said that I didn’t intend to change the route. I was concerned that two entrants decided that the old railway line leading to the first checkpoint was not enough of a challenge and they made up their own route to the checkpoint. If anything had happened to them where would we have started to look? I know that not everyone likes the entire route (I didn’t when I used to take part) but that route, and sticking to it, is important for your safety.
