Race Report

Dear Competitor,
When the weather forceast recommended people didn’t go hill walking we were relieved so many of you turned up. As it turned out you were right and the forecasters were wrong, some of you even had a following wind on the homeward stretch.
Thank you to all those of you who have since written in, though I don’t think we will follow up one letter that suggested we remove all the rocks from Cave Dale.
Thanks also to the marshals, organisations and sponsors who gave of their time, money and equipment in either adverse weather or hard financial times.
Last year the event raised £700, with a further £1493.54 being raised by you through individual sponsorship. So far this year we have received £357.50.
Lou Myers has again brought two medals for us to award to anybody we believe has done something out of the ordinary. This year they go to John & Fred from checkpoint 9 who were at one point doing the work of five people, and to Mikk Bradley who came in 2nd after falling over a stile on Mam Tor, losing 20 minutes taking a detour at Tideswell, finished by the back door, and then wrote in to say he’d be back next year. Lou himself didn’t finish this year, but when he limped down the yard to find we were short of a marshal on one of the road junctions, he insisted on going out there providing he was called back in time to give Doris a bouquet of flowers at the awards presentation (Doris is in charge of the catering).
Some extra signs will be going out next year as a result of problems found by marshals and competitors, but we would like to remind you that the signs are there to complement your maps, not to replace them. Should you get lost on our event in future, please try to contact us as soon as possible by using the emergency number on the back of the Tally Card. One gentleman forgot it was there so we had three vehicles out looking for him until his wife phoned a while later Lo say she had heard from him and was going to pick him up.
Next year the event will be on the 26th September and will be the last event in the Trail Runners Associations’ 3 Race Series, along with the Mendip Trail Race in April, and the South Downs Way 80 Miler in June. We have included all three entry forms, just in case you are tempted. If you are a walker, please do not be put off by this, we welcome you just as warmly as the runners.
Incidently, our list of finishers in all our events is now down to 12, most of whom are walkers.
As always we would be pleased to hear from you if you have any constructive criticism which would help us to improve the event in future years.
Best wishes,

Geoff and Helen
